Teacher Certification

This program offers an alternative study for professional musicians who wish to take the necessary courses to become certified as a music teacher according to the Certification Regulations (which are in force) of the Puerto Rico Department of Education.

Designed for students who have graduated in the specialties of Performance or Composition, whether from the Conservatory or another accredited institution of higher education, who are interested in taking the necessary courses to obtain the Teacher Certification of the Public Education System of Puerto Rico. The Department of Music Education and the Certification Office of the State Department of Education regulate the courses necessary to be certified as a teacher in Puerto Rico.

Admission requirements

Candidates for admission to the Teacher Certification Program must meet the following requirements:

1. Have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate in Music or Arts from an accredited institution, in one of the following concentrations:
to. Music
b. Arts with a concentration in music
c. Humanities with a concentration in music
2. In the case of active students, they may be admitted to the Teacher Certification Program from their third year of instrument.
3. Have a general index of no less than 3.00 on a scale of 0.00 – 4.00 points.
4. Submit a 500-word essay that sets out the applicant's goals and objectives as a future professional in the world of music education and what qualities he or she believes he or she possesses to achieve them.
5. Submit the Application for Admission to the Teacher Certification Program accompanied by all the documents described above, on or before the date stipulated in the academic calendar, and pay the corresponding fee (non-refundable).
6. Submit a transcript of credits officially sealed by the institution where you obtained your university degree.
7. Interview with the director of the Department of Musical Education and General Studies. It will be the function of the department director, and/or designated faculty member, to evaluate the candidate's file and make the recommendation to accept or not accept the candidate. The director will evaluate, among other things:
to. Type of academic degree obtained (verify the existence of at least one concentration in music).
b. General academic index not less than 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.
c. Written communication skills through the presentation, development and support of ideas.

The Dean of Academic and Student Affairs will evaluate the applicant's file together with the recommendation of the director of the Department of Music Education and General Studies and will make the final decision on its acceptance or denial. After the evaluation and recommendation, the Admissions Office will inform by letter of the determination made and will proceed to give instructions on the process to follow.

Active students must have completed the second year of their specialty instrument to be admitted to the program.
