Admission Requirements for Bachelor's Programs in Music

Our bachelor's programs provide students with an exceptional education designed to help them achieve their highest artistic, academic, and professional potential. As part of its inclusive philosophy, the Conservatory has expanded its original mission as an institution dedicated to classical music to include a broad range of musical traditions, including Caribbean music, Puerto Rican folk music, and Jazz.

Bachelor of Music in Performance

General Admission Requirements

  1. Complete and submit the Application for Admission with the appropriate application fee by the deadline established in the Academic Calendar. Late applications are subject to an additional fee.
  2. Request that an official transcript be sent directly to the Conservatory from the most recent accredited institution attended. The transcript must demonstrate a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. High school applicants must submit a final official transcript after graduation confirming completion of secondary education, the graduation date, and a copy of the high school diploma.
  3. Successfully complete the required audition on their principal instrument. Applicants residing outside Puerto Rico may submit a single, unedited audition video instead of attending the live audition. Videos must be submitted as a YouTube link by email to admisiones@cmpr.edu or by mail on DVD-R (Region 1) in .mov or .avi format. Edited videos will not be accepted.
  4. Complete the Theory and Aural Skills Placement Examination. Preparation resources are available on the Conservatory's website and through teoria.com.
  5. Submit official results from the College Entrance Examination Board (College Board Puerto Rico and Latin America) or the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Scores from the Spanish and English sections are used for placement into the required language courses. This requirement applies only to applicants graduating from high school.

Students who are admitted must submit:

  1. A copy of their birth certificate.
  2. A valid Immunization Certificate (PVAC-3) showing all required vaccinations. This requirement applies to students under 21 years of age.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education is designed for students who aspire to become music educators in K–12 classrooms and who are committed to providing an inclusive musical experience for all learners, including both students who participate in school music ensembles and those who do not.

  2. Request that an official transcript be sent directly to the Conservatory from the most recent accredited institution attended. The transcript must demonstrate a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. High school applicants must submit a final official transcript after graduation confirming completion of secondary education, the graduation date, and a copy of the high school diploma.
  3. Submit a minimum 500-word essay with the application explaining why they wish to become a music educator, their professional goals and aspirations, and the personal qualities they believe will contribute to their success in the profession.
  4. Successfully complete an interview with the Coordinator of the Department of Music Education. The interview is intended to evaluate the applicant's commitment to the teaching profession and to discuss the submitted essay. Based on the interview, the coordinator will determine whether the applicant should proceed to the remaining stages of the admission process or consider pursuing another academic program. Applicants who receive a favorable recommendation will continue to the instrument audition.
  5. Successfully complete the audition on their principal instrument.

Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

Admission Requirements

Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

 

    1. Have completed high school or be scheduled to graduate before May of the current academic year.
    2. Complete and submit the Application for Admission and pay the $75.00 non-refundable application fee by the deadline established in the Academic Calendar.
    3. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or the equivalent of a B average under another grading system). Applications from students whose GPA is below this requirement will not be considered.
    4. Submit official results from the College Entrance Examination Board (College Board Puerto Rico and Latin America) or the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Spanish and English section scores are also used for placement into the required language courses.
    5. Submit a minimum 500-word essay with the application describing why they wish to become a music therapist, their professional goals, and the personal qualities they believe will help them succeed in the profession. 
    6. Successfully complete an interview with the Chair of the Department of Music Education and Music Therapy and/or members of the department faculty. The interview is intended to assess the applicant's motivation, evaluate the submitted essay, and determine whether the applicant should proceed to the remaining stages of the admission process or be advised to pursue another academic program. 
    7. Demonstrate written and conversational proficiency in both English and Spanish. Applicants will be required to write one essay in English and one essay in Spanish following the interview.
    8. Receive a favorable recommendation from the Department of Music Education and Music Therapy faculty before proceeding to the audition on their principal instrument. Applicants who do not successfully complete the instrument audition will not be admitted to the Conservatory.
    9. Complete the Theory and Aural Skills Placement Examination. Sample examinations and preparation resources are available on the Admissions section of the Conservatory's website.
    10. Submit three letters of recommendation.

Bachelor of Music in Composition

Composition, theory and musicology

  1. Complete and submit the Application for Admission with the appropriate application fee by the deadline established in the Academic Calendar. Late applications are subject to an additional fee.
  2. Request that an official transcript be sent directly to the Conservatory from the most recent accredited institution attended. The transcript must demonstrate a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. High school applicants must submit a final official transcript after graduation confirming completion of secondary education, the graduation date, and a copy of the high school diploma.

 

Composition Interview Requirements

  • Submit three (3) original compositions, each fully notated. Whenever possible, the works should be written for different instruments or instrumental ensembles.
  • Include a recording of at least one of the submitted compositions. Recordings may be either live or digitally produced and may be submitted electronically or on CD.
  • Perform a musical work of their own choosing and/or one of their original compositions on their principal instrument.
  • Participate in an interview with the Composition Faculty Committee. During the interview, applicants should be prepared to discuss their submitted compositions and creative process.
  • Upon successfully completing the interview, take the Theory and Aural Skills Placement Examination. Preparation resources are available on the Conservatory's website and through teoria.com.

2. Request that an official transcript be sent directly to the Conservatory from the most recent accredited institution attended. The transcript must demonstrate a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. High school applicants must submit a final official transcript after graduation confirming completion of secondary education, the graduation date, and a copy of the high school diploma.

3. Submit a pre-screening video with the application. Please refer to the Audition Process section for detailed submission requirements.

4. Submit a portfolio highlighting previous experience and accomplishments in musical theatre. The portfolio should include materials such as photographs, performance programs, reviews, and a detailed list of previous productions specifying the title of each production, the role performed, the venue, and the year. Applicants should also include any previous training in acting, singing, and dance, if applicable.

5. Submit two letters of recommendation from voice teachers, acting coaches, stage directors, or other musical theatre professionals who can evaluate the applicant's artistic ability and potential.

6. Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening audition will be invited to participate in a live audition at the Conservatory on February.

7. Complete the Theory and Aural Skills Placement Examination. Preparation resources are available on the Conservatory's website and through teoria.com.

8. Take the theory and dictation placement exam. We have several resources available on our website or teoria.com that can help applicants prepare for this exam.
