About the Department of Music Education

The Department of Musical Education and General Studies brings together all those students who wish to become music educators in schools in Puerto Rico and abroad. Our teacher preparation program is the leader in the training of music educators in Puerto Rico, offering students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills and aesthetic judgment, as well as a high level of musical performance.

It completes its preparation with a component of professional skills that enables it to practice the teaching profession in three different specialties: instrumental, choral and general education, both at the elementary and secondary levels.

About Music Education at CMPR

The CMPR has the leading music teacher preparation program in Puerto Rico, offering students opportunities to gain and demonstrate excellence in music teaching skills, critical thinking, and aesthetic judgment, coupled with superior musicianship and performance skills for the solid formation of a performing-educator. The program offers three concentrations: general music education, choral music education, and instrumental music education.

Learning outcomes

The graduate of this specialty:

  • You will demonstrate a broader and deeper understanding of the profession, pedagogical skills and its requirements. Students will demonstrate an understanding of professional requirements through a thesis, lesson plans, course exams, seminars, demonstration classes, and any other work relevant to the profession of music education.
  • You will demonstrate technical mastery in theory, music history, and analysis. Students will demonstrate technical proficiency through class tests.
  • You will demonstrate research skills in the field of music education in general, in order to meet the pedagogical and curricular needs of music education programs in public and private schools.
  • You will demonstrate leadership skills that will contribute to the growth and development of music programs across the island.
