About the Jazz and Caribbean Music Specialty

The CMPR Jazz and Caribbean Music program encourages the technical development of the instrument and the fundamental elements of harmony, theory, improvisation and characteristic styles of jazz and Caribbean music. Improvisation and arrangement courses, private classes and participation in various ensembles are part of the experiences that seek to fully develop the potential and skills of students to understand and interpret all the traditional styles of jazz and the music of Puerto Rico and Caribbean.

  • The graduate will demonstrate at a high level the comprehensive capabilities and artistry of playing his or her instrument, including the ability to work independently to prepare public performances.
  • The graduate will demonstrate technical mastery in his or her instrumental medium through public performances, performances in musical ensembles, departmental juries, ensemble auditions, seminars, master classes, and recital.

Improvisation courses, arrangement, private lessons, and participation in various ensembles are part of the experiences that seek to develop to the maximum the potential and skills of students to understand and interpret all traditional styles of jazz and music of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students who are graduating performance diploma majors will develop at the highest level possible comprehensive capabilities and artistry in the major performing medium, including the ability to work independently to prepare performances.
  • Students will demonstrate technical mastery of their instrumental medium through public performances, ensemble performances, departmental juries, ensemble auditions, seminars, master classes, pre-recitals, and recitals.
