The Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music provides students with a series of experiences that stimulate their development as performers through participation in different institutional ensembles. The Conservatory has a diversity of groups with different approaches and formats. Participation in ensembles is required for all students and their requirements vary according to their study programs. Students have the opportunity to join one or more of the institutional ensembles that perform regularly in the different concert series. Among these presentations, the participation of the Symphonic Band in a special gala concert at the famous and prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York stands out. Other groups, such as the Concert Choir, have traveled to both the United States and Europe.
The Symphony Orchestra is the oldest institutional group at the Conservatory. It provides students with the experience of studying and performing orchestral literature through concert presentations of complete works from all styles and periods. The orchestra also collaborates with the annual production of the Opera Workshop and is also one of the accompanying groups of the winners of the institution's concert competition.
The Symphonic Band is one of the most exposed groups of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Winner of the Gold Medal at the New York International Festival of Bands and Orchestras, held at the famous Carnegie Hall, it is composed of students of wind and percussion instruments of different levels. It provides its members with knowledge of musical literature for wind and percussion groups, including diverse compositions ranging from the symphonic field to works written from the Renaissance era. It has been noted for the premiere in Puerto Rico of some of the most important works of contemporary literature for wind and percussion ensembles and for the premiere of works by Puerto Rican composers.
Group where students are exposed to the repertoire for “Big Band” emphasizing an eclectic repertoire, cultivating the traditional aspect, as well as the contemporary in the different musical styles and cultures.
The Concert Choir specializes in the study of works of choral literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Since its founding, it has maintained a track record of musical excellence and has performed with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Casals Festival, as well as at various festivals in and outside of Puerto Rico.
The Opera Workshop is a vocal, theatrical and musical production laboratory. The Workshop experience includes staging complete operas, as well as scenes from the best-known operas. It serves as a laboratory for singing students to expose themselves to the public.
The institution has various chamber music ensembles and smaller ensembles of different configurations and different genres: classical, folk, jazz and Afro-Caribbean music. All major, minor, and chamber music ensembles perform in public concerts at least once a semester.
