Advice from our graduates for future students

As part of the exit surveys administered annually by the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, graduating students have the opportunity to share advice and recommendations for those beginning their academic journey. The following summary compiles the most recurring themes identified among the graduating classes of 2022 through 2026.

1. Discipline beats talent

The most frequent recommendation from graduates is to develop consistent habits of practice, study, and organization. Students emphasize that success in music depends not only on talent, but also on perseverance, preparation, and a daily commitment to learning.

“Discipline can overcome talent.”

“Effective and consistent practice is the key to progress.”

2. Take advantage of every available opportunity

Graduates recommend actively participating in recitals, ensembles, masterclasses, seminars, festivals, student projects, and extracurricular activities. The university experience is significantly enriched when students participate beyond the minimum curriculum requirements.

Graduates recommend exploring different musical genres, artistic experiences, and learning opportunities. Versatility, curiosity, and openness to new experiences were identified as important elements for professional growth.

Many graduates recommend developing additional skills to complement musical training, including:

  • Teaching
  • Arrangements and composition
  • Music technology
  • Production
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Personal marketing
  • Artistic management

The students emphasize that the current music profession requires multiple skills in addition to instrumental or vocal performance.

Graduates emphasize the importance of maintaining healthy habits throughout their university studies. Recommendations include:

  • Healthy eating
  • Injury prevention
  • Stress management
  • Mental health care

Students recognize that personal well-being is fundamental to sustainable artistic development.

7. Develop your own artistic identity

The graduates recommend avoiding constant comparisons with other musicians and focusing on developing their own artistic voice. Creativity, authenticity, and individual growth appear as recurring values in the graduating class's responses.

8. Persevere

Students acknowledge that a career in music presents academic, personal, and professional challenges. However, the most consistent message among graduating classes is simple:

Don't give up.

Perseverance, patience, and confidence in the process were mentioned repeatedly throughout the evaluation period.
