Audition requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance and Caribbean Music with a concentration in Bass, Drums, Puerto Rican Cuatro, Guitar, Piano, Latin Percussion, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Singing

Note:
Candidates must demonstrate talent and potential through an audition. The technique, performance, musicality, phrasing, their capacity for improvisation and sight reading in their concentration instrument will be evaluated. In the instruments where required, the applicant will provide their own musical accompaniment that can be in MP3, MP4, IPOD, laptop, and/or CD format. The CMPR will provide stereo equipment with a 1'' cable or line to connect electronic devices. Every audition will include an auditory, melodic, harmonic and rhythmic test, as well as sight reading.

Voice

  1. A piece to choose from the Vaccai method
  2. A blues piece to choose from:
    Billies Bounce, Straight No Chaser, Tenor Madness, Blue Monk.               
    (Perform the melody and two improvisational chorus “Scatting”)
  3. A ballad or bolero to choose between:
    Misty, Body and Soul, How was it, Bésame mucho.                                                  
    (Play the melody)
  4. A Jazz Standard to choose from:
    All The Things You Are, How high is the mood, Autumn Leaves, Bye bye blackbird.
    (Play the melody)
  5. A Latin theme to choose from:
    Obsession, Lágrimas Negras, Cachita, El Manisero. (Play the melody)
  6. Scales and arpeggios:
    Major scale, natural minor, melodic minor and harmonic minor.
    (the scales and arpeggio will be sung in an 8th)
  7. Reading at first sight. The jury will provide a document for the evidence

Battery

1. Repertoire.
The candidate must be prepared to play a memorized piece from the list, in each of the following contrasting styles. The candidate is responsible for providing the clues with which he or she will execute the required topics. The candidate must provide the audio on a cell phone, iPad, laptop or computer (not depend on the internet).
a) JAZZ STANDARD (Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser, Now is the Time o Au Privave, Solar, Autumn Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, There is no Greater Love. All the Things You Are)
b) LATIN JAZZ STANDARD (Manteca, Mambo Inn, Footprints, Cachita, Lágrimas negra, Spain) Genres that do not have Clave, (such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Tango etc.) will not be accepted for audition.
The candidate must interpret in each piece:
– Accompaniment in style
– Trading four improvisation on the form of the theme and on a vamp or montuno in the Latin piece.

* The student must know the direction of the key (3-2 or 2-3) in the Latin standard.

2. Rudiments
The candidate must be prepared to play the first 24 stick control exercises of the Lawrence Stone method (pp. 5 and 6) and the 40 Rudiments of the Percussive Art Society, played in sixteenth notes. The minimum speed to execute them will be 75 bpm for the quarter note. The panel of teachers will choose the exercises to execute.

3. Rhythmic reading of syncopation and general.
The candidate will demonstrate ability in the area of sight reading in syncopation (cut time, alla breve or 2/2), in general rhythmic reading, as well as in simple Drum charts in jazz or Latin genres provided by the panel of teachers . The speed established for this test is that indicated on the model provided by the teacher.

4. Bonus.
Play a Solo from the drum books Rick Latham “Advanced Funk Studies”, Jim Chapin “Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer” or snare drum books John Pratt “Modern Contest Solos: For Snare drum”.

5. Intonation.
The candidate will intone melodic intervals: (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th)

Latin percussion

1. Repertoire – Two pieces that demonstrate knowledge of contrasting styles – ternary and binary – of Caribbean genres:
to. In ternary time – yubá, corvé, leró, rumba columbia, bembé, palo and abakuá among others (Example: Foot Prints, AfroBlue, Equinox, etc.)
b. In binary time – mambo, guaracha, sicá, dutch, plenay and guangacó among others
(Ex. Manteca, Mabo Inn, Cumbanchero, Caravan, Cachita, ect.)

2. Linear sight reading type Syncopation and/or Modern Reading text in 4/4. The reading of the exam will be provided by the examining jury.

3. Call & response exercises where the teacher plays a phrase and the candidate repeats it on the instrument of their choice (conga, bongo or timbale). In each of the pieces different concepts will be demonstrated such as accompaniment, rhythmic sense, knowledge of form and improvisation.

4. The applicant will provide their own musical accompaniment that can be in MP3, MP4, iPod, laptop and/or portable CD format. The Conservatory will provide stereo equipment with a 1” cable or line to connect electronic devices.

5. Knowledge and execution of the basic rudiments-single stroke roll, five stroke roll, seven stroke roll, nine stroke roll, single, double, and triple paradiddle, single flam, flam accent, flam tap, drag, single Drag tap and Double Drag tap.

Piano

1. Demonstrate ability and skills in the area of sight reading in treble clef and bass clef, as well as in “Real Book” style topics, including basic aptitude for improvisation on a topic chosen by the panel. The minimum speed for this test is 800mm. An auditory and rhythmic test will be included.

2. Major, natural minors, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales, Jazz Melodic, ascending and descending equally to four octaves, measured in sixteenth notes. The minimum tempo to play them will be 80 bpm for the quarter note—all major and minor arpeggios.

3. Repertoire–Play a memorized piece in each of the following contrasting styles: a. Bb Blues of blues to choose between:
to. Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser, Blue train or Au Privave
b. Jazz Standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, Then is not Greater Love, All the things you are
c. Latin/Jazz to choose from: Green Dolphin Street, Song for My Father, Manteca, Mambo Inn, Footprints, Blue Bossa, Recuérdame

4. A work or technical study in which you demonstrate technical skill, sound and control appropriate for your level on the instrument to choose from: Beethoven Sonatina no. 5, Invention or a Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by JS Bach.

5. Each piece of categories a, b, c must contain the following elements:
Melody in the right hand and chord accompaniment in the left hand.
Accompaniment with both hands in style.
Improvisation on the harmonic changes of the piece in its complete form.

The student can replace his or her backing track, or will be accompanied by the teachers.

Double Bass-Electric Bass

1. Scales
majors, minors (Aeolian), melodic minors (Jazz melodic minor), harmonic minors in any key. These will be played at two octaves in sixteenth notes, at a minimum tempo of 80 bpm.

2. Sight reading
a “Jazz Standard” type piece in bass clef. The reading will be based on three parts: reading the melodic line, accompaniment on the corresponding harmony and a basic improvisation on the changes and form. The minimum speed will be 60 bpm.

3. Repertoire
Play a memorized piece in each of the following contrasting styles.
The candidate is responsible for providing the audio music to be accompanied at the audition.
to. Bb blues or F blues to choose between: Blue monk, Straight no Chaser, Blue train or Au Privave.
b. Jazz Standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in Morning Sunrise, There is no greater love, All the things you are.
c. Latin/Jazz to choose from: Green Dolphin Street, Song for myFather, Manteca, Mambo Inn, Footprints, Blue Bossa or Rememberme. Melody, accompaniment and improvisation on the harmonic changes of the piece in its complete form.
d. A technical study in which you demonstrate your skill on the instrument, synchronization of both hands, sound and control appropriate for your level on the instrument. Ex: Classical studies.

Four Puerto Rican

1. Major, minor melodic, harmonic and natural scales, in all tones at two octaves. Major and minor arpeggios in all tones at two octaves, with their inversions.

2. Perform two (2) works (preferably from memory) from the Puerto Rican cuatro repertoire and contrasting rhythms:-Dance, fox, paso doble, mazurka or hallway-Guaracha, seis or bonus with improvisation section.

3. Perform a piece from another non-traditional or folkloric repertoire of Puerto Rico or international (may include classical repertoire transcribed to the instrument, or examples: Cachita. Mambo Inn, Footprints, Girl from Ipanema or Blue Bossa.

4. Sight reading.

5. Improvisation test in simple progression.

Electric guitar

1. Sight reading a “Jazz Standard” type piece in treble clef. The reading will be based on three parts: reading the melodic line, accompaniment on the corresponding harmony and a basic improvisation on the changes and form. The minimum speed will be 60 bpm for the quarter note.

2. Major, minor (Aeolian), melodic minor (Jazz melodic minor) harmonic minor scales in any key. These will be played two octaves from the 6th and 5th strings in sixteenth notes, at a minimum tempo of 80 bpm.

3. Repertoire-Play a memorized piece in each of the following contrasting styles. The candidate is responsible for providing audio music to be accompanied at the audition:
to. Bb blues or F blues to choose from: Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser, Blue Train or Au Privave.
b. Jazz Standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, There is no Greater Love, All the Things you are.
c. Latin/Jazz to choose from: Green Dolphin Street, Song for my father, Manteca, Mambo Inn, Footprints, Blue Bossa, or Rememberame.

4. A technical study in which you demonstrate your ability in the use of the plectrum, synchronization of both hands, sound and control appropriate for your level on the instrument. Example: Bach Inventions, Jim Snidero Studies, Barry Galbraith “Chord Solos”. Melody, accompaniment and improvisation on the harmonic changes of the piece in its complete form.

Saxophone

1. Demonstrate ability in the area of sight reading in treble clef, as well as in “Real Book” style topics, including minimal improvisation skills on a topic chosen by the panel. The minimum speed for this test is 60 mm.

2. Extended major scales, natural minors, harmonic minors and melodic minors (jazz melodic, going up and down equally), and with the following articulations: tenuto, staccatoligado, linked with jazz phrasing (bepop articulation). The minimum speed to execute them will be 80mm black.

3. Repertoire–Play a memorized piece in each of the following contrasting styles. Improvisation on the harmonic changes of the piece in its complete form. The candidate is responsible for providing audio music to be accompanied at the audition.

b. Jazz standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in the morning sunrise, There is no greater love.

d. A study from the book Selected Studies by Himmie Voxman.

Trumpet

1. Major scales, minor scales (Aeolian), melodic minors (Jazz melodic Minor, harmonic minors in any key. These will be executed at two octaves according to the candidate's register in eighth notes, at a minimum tempo of 80 bpm.

2. Sight reading
“Jazz Standard” type piece in treble clef. The reading will be based on two parts, reading the melodic line and a basic improvisation on the changes and form. The minimum speed will be 60 bpm.

3. Repertoire
Play a memorized piece in each of the following contrasting styles. The candidate is responsible for providing audio music to be accompanied at the audition:
to. Bb blues or F blues to choose from: Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser, Blue Train or Au Privave.
b. Jazz Standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, There is no greater love, All the things you are.

d. A technical study in which you demonstrate technical skill, sound and control appropriate for your level of instrument, such as: Arbans – a characteristic study or Clark Technical study #1 and #2.

Trombone

1. Major, minor (Aeolian), melodic minor (Jazz melodic minor), harmonic minor scales in any key. They will be played up to the 9th, in eighth notes, at a minimum tempo of 100 bpm.

2. Sight reading a piece
“Jazz Standard” type in the key of Sol and F. The reading will be based on two parts: reading the melodic line and a basic improvisation on the changes and forms. The minimum speed will be 60 bpm.

3. Repertoire
Play a memorized piece in each of the following contracting styles. The candidate is responsible for providing audio music to be accompanied at the audition:
to. Bb blues or F blues to choose between: Blue Monk, Straight No Chaser, Blue Train or Au privave
b. Jazz Standard to choose from: Solar, Autum Leaves, Bluesette, Four, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, There is no greater love, All the things you are.
c. Latin/Jazz to choose from: Green Dolphin Street, Song for My father, Manteca, Mambo Inn, Footprints, Blue Bossa or Rememberame.

Play exercise #2 from the book #1 Melodius Etudes for Trombone by Joannes Rochut, in the register that appears and/or low octave at 80 bpm the quarter note.

 


  • Equipment availability: The candidate is required to bring his or her own instrument. They should also bring amplifiers for their instruments for practice purposes. The Conservatory will only provide amplifiers for ensembles.

  • Important: Passing the audition does not necessarily guarantee that the student will ultimately be admitted. Admission to the Conservatory of Music is subject to the candidate meeting the average, all admission requirements and the availability of spaces in the requested study program. A waiting list will be created in the case of those studies where the number of admitted students exceeds the available spaces. If assigned to a waiting list, appointments will be announced via regular mail. Your enrollment is not guaranteed for the academic year in which you applied. If there are no spaces available in the waiting studio, the student must apply and audition again for the next academic year.

  • Candidates who are not residents of Puerto Rico and/or International, can send their audition through a YouTube link (“unlisted”), or some accessible digital platform so that the faculty can evaluate the video.

  • Applicants must meet the requirements specified here. Any requirement that is left out must be completed during your admission to the institution.
