About Music Education at PRCM

The PRCM has the leading music teacher preparation program in Puerto Rico, offering students opportunities to gain and demonstrate excellence in music teaching skills, critical thinking, and aesthetic judgment, coupled with superior musicianship and performance skills for the solid formation of a performing-educator. The program offers three concentrations: general music education, choral music education, and instrumental music education.

It completes its preparation with a component of professional skills that enables it to practice the teaching profession in three different specialties: instrumental, choral and general education, both at the elementary and secondary levels.

Learning outcomes

The graduate of this specialty:

  • You will explain the fundamentals of music as a basic component of general education to professional colleagues, administrators, and the general public.
  • You will demonstrate the ability to maintain positive relationships with diverse people from diverse social and ethnic groups, and be empathetic with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • It will demonstrate the skills to guide students in understanding music as an art form, as a means of communication, and as part of their intellectual and cultural heritage.
  • It will employ content knowledge, methodologies, philosophies, materials, technologies, and curriculum development for general, vocal, choral, and instrumental music.
  • You will demonstrate competency in performance as a soloist (vocal or instrumental) and in a variety of musical ensembles.
  • You will demonstrate leadership and entrepreneurship competencies as it relates to professional practices in the field of music education.
