Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre

Overview:

The Bachelor of Music in Musical Theater program deeply addresses all disciplines of Musical Theater, offering students a practical and progressive approach. It is a unique and specialized program in Puerto Rico dedicated to training students in the field of professional Musical Theater. The program seeks the highest level of performance in singing and acting, in addition to training them in the core areas of music, dance and the business of Musical Theater. Students will have a large number of activities where they will be able to carry out their artistic experience in musical theater productions, enabling them to continue graduate studies or begin a professional career in the field of Musical Theater in Puerto Rico and the United States.

 

Graduate Profile: 

  • You will achieve the highest level of performance as a singer and actor.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of sight reading skill.
  • You will be able to use your basic musical theatre dance skills at a basic level.
  • You will be trained to act, sing and dance in professional musical theatre productions in a variety of formal and informal settings.
  • You will have the appropriate techniques to participate in auditions.
  • You will demonstrate exceptional skills in auditory analysis, improvisation, history, and repertoire to work with problems in music.

Admission Requirements Bachelor of Music Program in Musical Theatre

1. Complete and submit the Application for Admission with the corresponding payment on or before December 5, 2025.

2. Request that the transcript of credits from the last accredited institution where the student is currently studying or has studied up to now be sent to the Conservatory. The transcript must show a general academic index of 2.00 or more on a 4.00 point scale. At the end of the semester from January to May, students must request the final transcript showing their fourth year and certifying that the student has completed high school, indicating the graduation date and providing a copy of the Graduation Diploma.

3. Submit a pre-screening video with your application (refer to the audition process area for details).

4. Submit a portfolio highlighting the candidate's achievements and experiences in musical theatre, including items such as photos, previous performance programmes and reviews. A detailed list of participations in musical theatre productions must be provided, specifying the title of the work, the role played, the location and the year of each production. Mention any previous training in dance, acting and singing, if relevant.

5. Submit 2 letters of recommendation from singing teachers, acting coaches, stage directors or other musical theatre professionals who can attest to your abilities and potential.

6. After passing the pre-selection audition, the CMPR will invite candidates to a live audition on February 6 and 7, 2026.

Audition Requirements

Candidates interested in being admitted to the Musical Theatre Program must follow a rigorous audition process, which consists of two fundamental stages:

Step One: Pre-Selection Video

1. Preparation of the material:
● Applicants must prepare and present two theatrical monologues, one dramatic and one comic, with a maximum duration of two minutes each.
● In addition, they must submit two musical theater songs: one with a more dramatic character (ballad) and one with a more upbeat character (up-tempo). Each song must be no longer than three minutes.
● Candidates must use musical backing tracks in their audition videos.

2. Video recording:
● Recordings must be high-quality, with good lighting and high-quality sound. They don't need to be professional recordings, but they should accurately reflect your musicality.
● Each piece or movement must be uploaded as a separate video, without editing.

3. Sending the pre-selection video:
● Applicants must upload their pre-selection videos to a designated platform, following the instructions provided by the CMPR.
● Ensure the video is available for review before the submission deadline.

Step Two: In-Person Hearing

1. Selection of candidates:
a) Based on the evaluation of the pre-selection videos, a select group of candidates will be invited to an in-person audition at the institution's facilities.

2. In-person audition: During the in-person audition, candidates must complete the following activities:
a. In-person audition: PERFORMANCE
• Monologues:
♪ Each candidate must present two monologues, one dramatic and one comedic, with a maximum duration of two minutes each.
♪ Monologues must be memorized and performed with strong emotional expression.
♪ Candidates must demonstrate their ability to take on different roles and convey credible emotions.
• Acting Workshop:
♪ Candidates will participate in an acting workshop led by musical theatre instructors.
♪ During the workshop, your improvisation skills, your understanding of acting techniques and your ability to work in a team will be assessed.

b. In-person Audition: DANCE
• Choreography:
♪ Candidates will be required to learn and perform a choreography prepared by our choreographer.
♪ Choreography may include movements from different dance styles, such as contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, ballet or tap.
♪ The execution of the choreography will be evaluated in terms of precision, expression and grace.
• Dance of Choice:
♪ Applicants will also have the opportunity to perform a short dance of their choice, in which they can highlight their skills and personal style.
♪ Candidates are encouraged to showcase their versatility in dance and present movements that complement their talent.

c. In-person Audition: SINGING
• Song Selection:
♪ Candidates must submit two live musical theatre songs, one song of a more dramatic nature and another of a cheerful nature.
♪ It is recommended to prepare one classic musical theater song and one contemporary song from the genre, preferably from the last 5 to 10 years.
• Musical Accompaniment:
♪ Candidates may choose to sing with live accompaniment provided by a pianist or use a recorded backing track.
♪ The musical selection must be performed with a strong emotional connection and convincing vocal expression.

• Assessment:
The admissions committee will evaluate the pitch, vocal range, projection, skills and interpretation of the scenes and songs submitted.

• Additional Interview:
Following the musical performance, candidates may be invited to a brief personal interview with the admissions committee, to discuss their audition, their artistic focus, and their interest in the major.

3. Final Evaluation
a. Candidates will be evaluated on their performance in the acting and singing workshop, choreography and personal interview.

4. Notification of Results
a. The final results of the in-person audition will be communicated to the candidates from 20 February 2026.
