We are pleased to announce that the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico has approved the creation of an independent Composition Department. During the first term of the new department, its director will be Professor Alfonso Fuentes. This approval allows us to diversify and strengthen the academic approach for the benefit of our student composers by providing them with unique opportunities to explore additional areas within composition.
This change will provide the opportunity to expand the focus of Composition into other emerging subspecialties, such as film and media scoring, video games, avant-garde music, world music, among others. This will open up new areas of study and growth for students, as well as opportunities to explore diverse musical expressions and practical applications of composition. It is hoped that this reorganization will not only enrich the academic offering, but will also attract a larger number of students, allowing for the selection of the best talent and fostering a more dynamic and diverse learning environment within the department.
With this reorganization, the Composition Department will not only expand its academic offering, but will also position itself to attract and nurture new talent, fostering a dynamic and diverse learning environment that enriches our educational community. This advancement is an important step in our mission to continue offering world-class music education and to contribute to the development of music in Puerto Rico and beyond.
