Flowers and Bullets Festival

Directed by composer Manuel Ceide and hosted by the ensemble Álea 21, the festival Flowers and Bullets The festival was established as a collective collaboration project, the purpose of which is to establish bridges of collaboration between composers, performers and musicologists, with the aim of creating a field of action in the Caribbean area based on avant-garde aesthetics. The artistic activity of the festival brings to light the subversive character with which the group has associated its vision of chamber music since its beginnings. It began in 2013 with the staging of a musical work: The Maroon (1969-70) composed in Cuba by the German composer Hans Werner Henze (1926-2012). The artistic and academic activities present in the past editions, which already exceed a dozen, have consisted of concerts, workshops and conferences, as well as the presentation of books and documentaries. All of this centered around themes related to the Caribbean avant-garde in the sixties and seventies in terms of the projection towards the future of these proposals in the activity of young composers and researchers. Taking Puerto Rico as a base of action and built on its own and imaginative typology, Flowers and BulletsIt has become a reference festival for the development and action of musical avant-gardes from a universal, Latin American and Caribbean vocation.
