The Music Education Forum is the oldest academic event at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. It was the professor emeritus of our conservatory, Nellie García de Justicia (RIP), who after assuming the direction of the newly created Department of Music Education in 1981, had the vision of establishing a space in which teachers and students could meet to discuss topics and issues of education in Puerto Rico, particularly on the importance and need to promote the integration of music as a formal subject in the curriculum of public and private schools in our country.
With that goal in mind, on May 5, 1982, under the motto Music is Basic… the music teacher is indispensable! The First Music Education Forum was held in the former Theater of the Special String Program for Children located in the former facilities of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music on FD Roosevelt Avenue in Hato Rey.
