Professional certification in the music business

The Professional Certification in the Music Business (Online) is aimed at musicians, artist managers, publishers, music industry professionals exploring to expand their knowledge, and individuals interested in the area of creative industries. The program will provide students with an understanding of the different careers in the music industry, its creation, production, manufacturing and sales processes. The certification will facilitate the analysis of aspects of marketing in the music industry, and will provide you with the necessary skills to develop a sustainable career in the area of promotion. In addition, it will provide an understanding of the legal aspects in the music and entertainment industry, for the negotiation and administration of the main contracts and laws applicable to a career. Students will understand issues related to copyright as a commercial tool in the music industry, its laws, intellectual property, registration and licensing of works, interpretation of cases and defense of copyright.

This program is created to be completed in one (1) year. However, the student will have up to a maximum of two (2) years to complete the certification. It will be offered online in a synchronous and asynchronous manner following the Distance Education Policy of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree in music, arts, business administration, communications, social sciences or cultural management and have a minimum average of 2.50. If you are an active student of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music (CMPR), you may be admitted starting in your third year of studies and must have an average of 2.50. For active students who have completed the MUBS3001 Professional Skills for Musicians course, it will be validated as part of the certification. Students who graduated from CMPR and who have completed the MUBS3001 course one (1) year before the beginning of the certification program will have the course validated. For students who graduated from CMPR and took the MUBS3001 course, two (2) years or more before the start of the program, you will be required to take a diagnostic exam. If not approved, the student will be automatically enrolled in the course.

To apply for admission you must meet the following requirements:

Comply with the payment of the admission fee of $100 dollars (non-refundable) on or before the date indicated in the academic calendar.
Submit an official credit transcript from the accredited university institution where you studied. The transcript is required to demonstrate that the student completed the Baccalaureate degree with a general academic index (grade point average) of 2.50 or more on a 4.00-point scale.
Candidates for the Professional Certification Program must attend and pass an interview with the Faculty of Music Education and General Studies through electronic means.

REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE THE CERTIFICATION

To complete the certification, students must pass all courses in the program with a minimum GPA of 2.50
Upon completion of the certification, the student will receive:

Professional skills from the only institution specialized in music in Puerto Rico
A digital certificate signed by the Rector of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.
A physical certificate from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

As established in the Institutional Catalog, the Conservatory will appoint an academic advisor professor who will be your guide and consultant in all academic matters related to the study program. The counselor will ensure that the student knows and understands the institutional policy and regulations that apply to him or her. All students must attend a session with their academic advisor every six months, with the purpose of evaluating their academic progress and determining the continuity of the study program, in accordance with their curriculum, before the pre-enrollment process for the following semester.

ONCE YOUR CERTIFICATION IS COMPLETED-GRADUATE PROFILE

The graduate of the Professional Certification in the Music Business will demonstrate an understanding of the processes of creation, production, manufacturing, distribution, promotion and sale of a musical product. You will have the ability to create and develop your own business within the music industry. It will create and develop opportunities conducive to maximizing the self-management of the professional musician or artist. The graduate will be able to explain the basic aspects of marketing, promotion and advertising and alternative media; You will be able to develop a practical work plan, identifying professional goals and priorities. As a connoisseur of the theoretical and practical application necessary for the understanding, negotiation and administration of the main contracts and applicable laws of the career of the music and entertainment industry, the graduate will be able to negotiate the basic aspects of contracts, understand legal aspects of the transformation of the music industry due to technology. The certification will provide the graduate with the ability to know the aspects related to copyright as a commercial tool in the music industry. This knowledge will allow the graduate to demonstrate knowledge of intellectual property laws and their impact on the profession of musicians, to possess skills that allow musicians to immediately detect intellectual property that they have to protect and works that can be protected by copyright. . These graduates will be able to license and register works as well as properly contract around them; interpret cases and precedents in order to analyze the practical operation of intellectual property and copyright at the local and federal level. The graduate will in turn be trained to adequately defend intellectual property rights over works composed, produced, performed or created in the context of the musical profession.

The skills acquired in the certification will enable the graduate to work in the following roles, without being limited to others:
