Musical Education in a Cultural Context

This elective course examines the social-ideological nature of music with special attention to: (a) the ways in which culture influences music education, musical preferences, musical cognition, and musical values and (b) the ways in which Musical practices influence culture and social relations. Topics include: music education as a multicultural education; music and genre; music and power; music as an amenity or comfort; the educational implications of the musical-cultural relationship; musical education as an agent of reproduction and social transformation; musical education as a socialization process and musical education as “text.”

Academic degree requirement:

Have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Music, Music Education, equivalent university degree in music or those comparable offered by universities.
