The Department's programs provide a musical education based on the development of the fundamental aspects of harmony, theory and improvisation of jazz and Caribbean music.

About Jazz and Caribbean Music at PRCM

The PRCM’s Jazz and Caribbean Music program fosters the technical development of the instrument and the fundamental elements of harmony, theory, improvisation, and styles characteristic of jazz and Caribbean music. Improvisation courses, arrangement, private lessons, and participation in various ensembles are part of the experiences that seek to develop to the maximum the potential and skills of students to understand and interpret all traditional styles of jazz and music of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

  • Demonstrate high level competence in performing and improvising music in various jazz and Caribbean music idioms and styles.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive capabilities about jazz and Caribbean music idioms and styles through solo performance and in a variety of ensemble settings.
  • Synthesize the history and literature of jazz and Caribbean music within the framework of its sources and cultural influences.
  • Compose (and arrange) music within a variety of jazz and Caribbean music idioms and styles.
  • Share critical assessments about voice performance by their peers, based on corresponding music periods and styles.
  • Demonstrate competence in leadership and entrepreneurship regarding professional practices in the field of jazz and Caribbean music performance.
