Editorial note
“If you thought I wasn't coming…” (popular Christmas music saying from Puerto Rico)
After two very difficult years for Puerto Rico and the entire world – COVID, Fiona, LUMA, Fiscal Control Board – Musiké flourishes with a new strain of articles that occupy the pages of volume eight that we review here. This edition includes investigative works by some former students of the Conservatory who showed interest in publishing with us and accepting the rigor of the editorial process. Thank you for your patience, determination and dedication, you have made a great contribution to the musical study of our country! The thematic variety of the volume, as always, is anchored to Puerto Rican musical endeavors. In a quasi-archaeomusicological work, Agustín Muñoz traces the lost traces of a dance genre of the American Baroque known as Puertorrico. For his part, Juan O'Halloran offers a brief overview of the development of the Band in Puerto Rico as an educational institution. Luis Ruiz Pacheco discusses the contribution of the Catalan composer Ramón Morla Trench to the sacred music tradition of the Island. Finally, among his student works, Carlos Rovira investigates the development of the New Song in Puerto Rico.
Volume eight also includes an article by the Puerto Rican composer living in Paris, Luis Quintana, who provides an interesting discussion on short genres in classical music from his analytical and philosophical perspective.
We take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Dr. Luis Hernández Mergal for his editorial work with the magazine. During the pandemic lapse, Mergal retired from Musiké to pursue a doctorate in music philosophy (congratulations!). We welcome Dr. Noraliz Ruiz, who has worked hard as editor of the current volume of Musiké, with hopes that she will continue working with the magazine in the future. As always, many thanks to the editorial board and to Jennifer Ortiz and Enrique Collado for their support in setting up the magazine and creating the new Musiké website.
We hope you enjoy the new volume!
