Note of mourning: Leonardo Egúrbida

TO THE ENTIRE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY:

The Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music joins the mourning of the family of Maestro Leonardo Egúrbida Avilés, Professor Emeritus, dedicated Teacher in our institution for more than 40 years and founder of the Classical Guitar program through which generations of young people have passed. His legacy as a guitarist, composer, educator, arranger and author of essential books such as 9 Puerto Rican Dances Transcribed for the Guitar, in addition to unforgettable recordings, are seeds to continue building on such a difficult, but noble art.

His departure plunges us into sadness, even though in life we were able to thank him for his dedicated work, which continues to inspire, in his tribute on November 12, 2016, on the occasion of the presentation of the book Original Compositions for Classical Guitar of his authorship, whose prologue was written by his friend, the Puerto Rican mandolin virtuoso Gustavo Batista (RIP). That day we gathered students, disciples, teachers, family and friends to celebrate his contribution to the repertoire of classical guitar and Puerto Rican music.

As his disciple and now as a public servant who works in this institution that will always be illuminated by the figure of Maestro Leonardo Egúrbida, we will be grateful for his contribution to the guitar, Puerto Rican music and his mentoring of the people we had the opportunity to have. his teachings in our lives.

On behalf of all the members of our university community, we express our deepest condolences to his wife, Mrs. Vilma Maldonado and his daughter Mrs. Moraima Egúrbida, other family members, friends, colleagues and disciples of the Master, with the most fervent wish for comfort. in the farewell of our beloved and admired Master.
