Information Skills Program

The Amaury Veray Library is one of the resources that supports the teaching and learning process available to the academic community of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. To effectively fulfill this mission, the Library has established an information literacy program. The main purpose of this program is to help all members of the university's student and faculty community become frequent, independent, and efficient users of information available both in the Library and in other sources and institutions.

The mission, goal, objectives, and activities of this program are presented below:

Mission

Develop more independent people, managers of their learning and skilled in searching for alternatives to solve their information needs.

Goal

To ensure that all members of the Conservatory's university-level student and teaching community develop the necessary skills to search for, evaluate, and use information effectively in problem-solving and decision-making, not only during their academic training but also throughout their lives.

Goals

Through the activities that are part of the Information Skills Program, it is expected that the academic community will be able to:

  • Identify your information needs.
  • Identify the nature and amount of information they need.
  • Access the information they need by carrying out searches effectively and independently.
  • Demonstrate competence in locating and using various resources.
  • Critically examine the sources of information consulted.
  • Organize and analyze the information collected to establish priorities.
  • Use information effectively to achieve a specific purpose.
  • Promote the proper use of information.

Activities

  • Preparation of tutorials.
  • Orientation to new students about the Library's resources and services (at the beginning of the semester).
  • Faculty orientation on Library resources and services (at the beginning of the academic year).
  • Scheduled orientations each semester by the Library or offered at the request of the faculty as part of their courses on:
    • Library resources and services.
    • Search strategies in the online catalog.
    • Database search strategies.
    • Evaluation of reliable sources of information.
    • Preparation of monographs, bibliographies and other written works.
    • Use of style manuals for writing written works.
    • Use of tools to prevent plagiarism and promote academic honesty.
